What can you do with a barbell and plates?

A barbell and plates offer endless possibilities for strength training and muscle development. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced lifter, here are some of the exercises and workouts you can do with a barbell and plates:

  1. Squats: Load the barbell with plates on both ends and place it across your shoulders. Perform squats by bending your knees and lowering your hips until your thighs are parallel to the ground, then stand back up.
  2. Deadlifts: Load the barbell with plates on both ends and place it on the ground in front of you. Bend at your hips and knees, grip the bar, and lift it up by extending your hips and standing tall.
  3. Bench Press: Lie on a flat bench with your feet on the ground. Load the barbell with plates on both ends and hold it with an overhand grip. Lower the bar to your chest and then press it back up to full arm extension.
  4. Overhead Press: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the barbell with plates at shoulder level. Press the bar overhead until your arms are fully extended, and then lower it back down.
  5. Bent-Over Rows: Bend at your hips with your knees slightly bent, holding the barbell with plates in front of you. Pull the bar up towards your chest, squeezing your shoulder blades together, and then lower it back down.
  6. Barbell Lunges: Hold the barbell with plates across your upper back. Step forward with one leg and lower your body until both knees are at 90-degree angles. Push back up to the starting position and repeat on the other leg.
  7. Romanian Deadlifts: Hold the barbell with plates in front of your thighs, keeping your knees slightly bent. Hinge at your hips, lower the barbell towards the ground, and then return to a standing position, focusing on engaging your hamstrings and glutes.
  8. Barbell Curls: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the barbell with plates at arm’s length. Curl the bar up towards your shoulders, squeezing your biceps, and then lower it back down.
  9. Barbell Hip Thrusts: Sit on the ground with your back against a bench, and place the barbell with plates across your hips. Lift your hips off the ground by squeezing your glutes, and then lower them back down.
  10. Push Press: Hold the barbell with plates at shoulder level. Dip slightly at the knees and then explosively press the bar overhead, using your legs to assist the movement.
